Blackboard Send Email


Note: The Blackboard Send Email feature allows you to quickly send email to your instructor or fellow classmates. You cannot view incoming email, or send an email to someone outside of your class with it. Any emails sent to you from your instructor or fellow classmates will be delivered to your CMICH email account.

Sending Blackboard Email

The Send Email feature can be accessed from two different area's:

1. From the Tools menu on the My Blackboard page. If you are enrolled in multiple courses, you will then be presented with a course listing where you will need to select the specific course you wish to send email to.
2. Or- Once you've logged into a specific course, by clicking Communication, Send Email
 

At this point, a screen similar to the following will appear, although the listings may be somewhat different in your course).

Functions

The following groups are available to send email to from the Send email page:
DescriptionGroup
All Users Sends email to all users in the course or organization.
All Groups Sends email to all of the groups in a specified course or organization.
All Teaching Assistants Sends email to all of the Teaching Assistants in a specified course.
All Instructors Sends email to all of the instructors for a specified course.
All Observers Sends email to all of the Observers for a specified course.
Select Users Sends email to a single user or selected users in a specified course. Select a person(s) by placing checkmark in box next to name.
Select Groups Send email to a single group or selected groups in a course. Select a group(s) by placing checkmark in box next to name.
Select Observers Sends email to a single Observer or select Observers in a specified course. Select by placing checkmark in box next to name.

After you've selected who should receive the email, the New Message screen will appear (see example below):


 
Field Description
Enter Message Details
To: Names of users to receive the email will appear. (This list will be replaced within the actual sent message with the Sender's name)
From: The user’s email address will automatically be displayed in this field.
Subject: Enter the subject of the email.
Message: Enter the email message.
Set Message Options
Copy of message to self: Click the check box to send a copy of the message to yourself.
Add Attachments
Add: Click here to add attachments. Select Browse on the page that appears and navigate to the file that should be attached to the email.

About the To: Address

To minimize the distraction of long lists of To: addresses, and to make the re-use of email addresses more difficult for potential email spammers, Blackboard places all destination email addresses into the mail message’s BCC: (Blind Carbon Copy) field so they do not appear in the actual email message. (The senders email address will appear in both the From: and To: fields).

Helpful Hints

Always include your first and last name in your email, so instructors and fellow classmates can more readily identify who you are. Many instructors teach multiple classes and receive a great deal of email--without identifying information such as this, it can delay their response and make it difficult to answer your questions efficiently.
