Examination Proctors

PLEASE NOTE: Not all courses require examinations, or require them to be completed in a proctored setting. Consult your specific course syllabus information to determine if you will need a proctor for your course.

Web courses will either have all online exams, or a combination of online exams, online proctored exams; and/or paper-based proctored exams. Click here to view  Online Quizzes/Exam Tip page for further information.

Learning packages require a proctor for paper-based exams.

Courses with online proctored exams require a proctor that has a computer with internet access which the student can utilize to take exams. The computer can be a desktop or laptop model, but it cannot be the students' own personal computer.

What are Proctors

A proctor is the person that administers exams to our students. Students must identify a proctor for any course that requires monitored exams. Once a proctor is identified, our office will verify the information and mail the exams directly to the proctor. The proctor administers the exams, one at a time, and signs the exam cover sheet. If the exam is paper-based, each exam is mailed back individually to CMU in a provided postage-paid envelopes. If the exam is computer-based, the proctor signs the exam cover sheet and mails it back to CMU at the end of the term in the provided postage-paid envelope.

Acceptable proctors include school counselors, school/college administrators, military/industry education or testing centers, or the librarian at a local library. In addition, any CMU center will proctor exams, as will the CMU Online staff in Mt. Pleasant.

Unacceptable proctors include, but are not limited to, family members, friends, co-workers, and other CMU students. CMU reserves the right to deny any proctor or assign proctors to students as deemed necessary. If you have questions about an individual’s suitability as a proctor, contact our office at 800-688-4268 for clarification.

If you have taken a distance learning course within the last two years, we will assume you will use the same proctor, provided they continue to be acceptable.
The student is responsible for any Proctor’s fees. Students should schedule examination dates with the proctor at times convenient to both. If one of the CMU centers is to be used as a proctor, please check with that center to determine available times and dates for testing.
