BLACKBOARD: CMU's online courses utilize Blackboard, which requires specific hardware and software to ensure adequate performance and connectivity. Use of a desktop or laptop computer with wired internet connection is strongly recommended, particularly when taking exams--mobile devices with wireless connections are less stable and more likely to drop off, causing you to be "kicked out" during an exam. The Browser/OS Matrix link located under the Additional Helpful Resources area below will display the currently supported browsers.
To verify if your own system meets requirements, visit Blackboard's Browser Check page.

WEBEX Some instructors may choose to use the Webex Conferencing Tool to hold real-time meetings for all course attendees. As such, you may be required to attend Webex meetings. Communication and collaboration within the online environment can be greatly enhanced through the use of a headset with microphone. It is strongly recommended that students purchase a combo headset microphone for active participation in CMU's online courses.

Some courses may require the use of Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) to take online exams. If this is the case, the LDB application must be downloaded, installed, and used to take the exam, in place of using a standard web browser. Some online courses may also require use of a webcam. Webcams are required in courses using Respondus Lockdown Browser with Monitor as as the exam security method.

Note: Some instructors may add additional content to their courses from 3rd party publishers which are not part of Blackboard.
A few examples include: Pearson MyLabs, Macmillan LaunchPad, and McGraw Hill Connect, although there are many other publisher platforms and online learning activities that may be used. The technical requirements for those systems might be different than the usual Blackboard settings. Be sure to read and follow recommendations from your instructor or the outside provider.
